The programme aims to produce graduates who have developed the appropriate basic knowledge and applied skills to meet the requirements for international academic recognition and/or appropriate national professional registration in the specializations of botany. Graduates will be able to contribute positively to future vocational and/or academic needs both locally (Southern Africa) and internationally through their ability to apply scientific methods in supervised research and/or problem solving, and communicate and/or implement investigative research findings effectively in a diversity of fields within the botanical sciences, for example, as botanists, environmental consultants and environmental managers.

This qualification will provide an introduction to research in the field of chemistry and will provide a much-needed qualification for professional chemists with a capacity for independent research.

a) Knowledge of chemistry at more advanced level than the Bsc. Level

The Honours qualification in Chemistry aims to develop the graduate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in Chemistry of learners to a higher level of analysis, interpretation and understanding of intricate chemical concepts in all spheres of human endeavour, in preparation for a career: - In industry and business;

The purposes of the qualification are: - To provide qualifiers with specialised knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a natural science discipline that provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

To provide graduates with a specialised knowledge in Chemistry through study in depth; to equip them with knowledge of research methodology and the ability to solve problems and develop theory through independent work and critical thinking, by the use of appropriate theory, methods and technique from different parts of mathematics. These graduates should be good communicators in spoken and written English, to both expert and non-expert audiences.

To provide an internationally recognised professional and career-oriented academic qualification that consolidates and rounds off undergraduate studies. A wide variety of courses may be selected to suite the candidate's career objectives.

- To prepare the candidate for a first specialisation in Computer Science.
