Purpose:
Remote Sensing and GIS technology is one of the fastest growing industries globally, on a par with I or greater than IT and computer science. It is being applied in nearly every facet of life. The South African and African GIS and Remote Sensing community have identified the lack of and expressed an urgent and major need for training in the fields of Remote Sensing and GIS within South Africa. At present the only qualifications within this field offered at South African tertiary institutions are an Honours in GIS and an MSc at the University of Stellenbosch, a distance learning postgraduate diploma (UNIGIS) and various short modules (2 -6 weeks) encompassed within Geography, Geology or Surveying Degrees. This is not adequate to fulfil the needs and requirements of employers.
The purpose of the qualification is to allow students who are currently registered for the B Sc Hons Applied Science degree to complete their studies in terms of the SAQA framework. The intention is to phase this qualification out and (with the necessary prescribe prerequisite modules accommodate students with different backgrounds (e.g. B Tech -degree) in the B Sc (Hons) (Engineering and environmental Geology) degree.

The qualification prepares learners to become conversant regarding theoretical and practical aspects on an advanced level regarding certain aspects of Biochemistry e.g. biotechnology, clinical biochemistry, nutritional and food science as well as techniques applicable to Biochemistry.
The qualification produces learners who will emerge with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the principle concepts of the field of Biochemistry. Also, equip these learners with good communication (written and oral), time management and technical skills as required in a wide variety of work places as indicated by extensive market research. To produce post-learners with the required insight and research skills commensurate with Honours Exit Level so that they can undertake higher-level research to meet South Africa's needs in Science, Education and Technology (SET).

Purpose: - The first purpose of this qualification is to provide students with the opportunity to engage in advanced academic study and research in the areas of Biokinetics.
The qualification develops the knowledge, skills and applied competence required to become a professional scientist in the biological field with specialisation in either Botany, Zoology Ethnobiology or Conservation Biology. It prepares the learner as a researcher in a wide range of biological disciplines such as biological conservation, water resource management, biotechnology, indigenous technology, eco-tourism, etc.
To provide learners with a specialised in-depth knowledge in Biology; to equip them with proficient ability in research methodology and to produce in them the ability to solve problems, exercise creative thinking, assess and organise information, and work independently and in teams. These learners should be good communicators in spoken and written English, to both expert and non-expert audiences.
