Purpose and rationale
The qualification prepares learners to become conversant regarding theoretical and practical aspects on an advanced level regarding certain aspects of Biochemistry e.g. biotechnology, clinical biochemistry, nutritional and food science as well as techniques applicable to Biochemistry.
The qualification also introduces learners to proposal writing the execution of research and the compilation and interpretation of research data, based on a research project on an approved topic in the field of Biochemistry.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Associated assessment criteria
- A Demonstrate knowledge of theories, definitions and learning areas applicable to the area of study effectively.
- Collect data using scientific equipment, analyse data and then present the results graphically.
- Solve problems by applying laws and principles of science effectively.
- Solve various problems including processes that require a critical evaluation and interpretation for resolution.
Integrated assessment
One three hour paper is written in each of the four theory questions papers. A research project of limited extent must be successfully completed and presented as a project report. Each candidate is subjected to a final oral examination. All the academic staff in the Department in conjunction with the external moderators constitute an examination committee that will allocate the final mark after the oral examination in the presence of the examination committee.
