- Produce graduates who can develop the Biotechnology industry in South Africa and understand the importance of research in this area.
- Produce postgraduates of a calibre to sustain and develop the Biotechnology in South Africa.
- Develop a research capacity adequate to stimulate growth in the numbers of Master of Science/Doctor of Philosophy (MSc/PhD) students, and the co-operation of the Biotechnology and the related sectors of the economy in joint research efforts.

- Display specialised scholastic and basic research skills in the field of Biotechnology and perform a full range of standard and advanced experimental procedures in Biotechnology in variable and complex routine and non-routine contexts.
- Possess specialised knowledge of the field of Biotechnology.
- Communicate effectively, in both oral and written modes, with peers and the broader biotechnology community.
- Assume responsibility for planning resourcing and managing processes.
