Purpose and rationale
The Honours qualification in Chemistry aims to develop the graduate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in Chemistry of learners to a higher level of analysis, interpretation and understanding of intricate chemical concepts in all spheres of human endeavour, in preparation for a career:
- In industry and business;
- In the public sector.
As a qualified professional chemist the learner will be able to
- Respond to the needs of society in chemical and related matters.
- Appreciate the value of education and Chemistry to society.
Being basically an academic qualification, the qualification also aims to develop lifelong learners and caters for the career prospects of qualified learners in a wide range of fields open to professional chemists.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, NQF level 7.

- Ability to identify, assess, formulate and solve complex problems of a chemical nature creatively, from their knowledge of the different domains of Chemistry.
- Demonstration of applied competence, i. e.
- That specified knowledge and understanding of concepts, and specified skills, over the chemical domain, have been mastered.
- That chemical knowledge and skills can be applied to solve real problems of a chemical nature, either individually or as part of a team.
- That process skills can be used to investigate chemical phenomena related to the material world.
- Correct use of Chemistry terminology and definitions.
- Effective communication using appropriate language and media; ability to prepare illustrative and interpretive scientific reports.
- Use of safe working practice in the chemical field.
- Ability to handle instrumentation and data processing relevant to the chemical field.

A range of formative and summative assessment methods, such as prescribed practicals, workplace assessments, project work singly and in groups, reflection, oral tutorials and written examinations, will be used integratively to assess whether the specified outcomes have been achieved.
