The agricultural industry is a major sector in the South African economy in terms of meeting the increasing food demands, employment, adding value and linkages with the other sectors of the economy. The Faculty of Agriculture aims at educating learners for life and equipping them with the skills to enable them to face the challenges of a dynamic agriculture sector, with emphasis on small-scale agriculture. In order to meet this objective, the Faculty of Agriculture, predominantly through the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development, offers a programme in Agriculture in Agricultural Extension.

The first purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with specialised knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in the field of pasture and rangeland management, that provide for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

The purpose of the qualification is to prepare students at an advance level for a management and planning career in rural areas. This course targets specifically those that have to operate at policy and operational level in institutions dealing with the socio-economic problems of developing areas.

The qualifying learner can conduct independent research under appropriate supervision in the field of visual communication and contribute to knowledge production in that field. The research problem, its justification process and outcome is reported in a dissertation which complies with the generally accepted norms for research at that level.

The qualifying learner will have the competence to make a significant contribution, through research, to the understanding, application and evaluation of existing knowledge in the specialised field of interior design and to demonstrate a high level of overall knowledge in that specialised area, ranging from fundamental concepts to advanced theoretical or applied knowledge.

This qualification applies to persons who wish to further their studies through research within an appropriate discipline related to the photographic field.

Persons attaining this qualification will have competence in consulting, diagnosing, communicating holistic advice to and managing patients in the field of homoeopathy. They will function as primary contact practitioners, according to the scope of practice of a Homoeopath. Also, they will be competent to compound, dispense and prescribe medicines within that scope of practice, and be able to conduct research of homoeopathic relevance. The qualification will render them eligible for registration with the statutory body.

A qualifying learner will be able to research in the food and consumer science fields to enhance the quality of life of the consumer.

Persons achieving this qualification will be able to conduct scientific research under minimal guidance in a chosen field, and to contribute to knowledge production in that field. The research problem, its justification, process and outcomes are reported in a dissertation which complies with the generally accepted norms for research at Level 9. A graduate with two years of experience in a relevant field may apply to the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions for registration as a Professional Natural Scientist.
