Project Management is one of the fastest growing bodies of knowledge and its application in commerce and industry is equally seen. Indeed, the South African Government has decided to adopt a project management method of organisation and delivery in its Department of Public Works. It is also in the process of recognising it as a new profession.

The first purpose of the programme is to provide qualifiers with post-graduate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in research, property development and management that provide a foundation for further intellectual development and opportunities for gainful employment and rewarding contributions to society. The second purpose of the programme is to enhance the body of knowledge about property valuation, development and management in South Africa through the pursuance of research-based enquiry and dissemination, via dynamic post-graduate courses. The purpose of the Master of Science in Quantity Surveying, Level 9 is to develop a knowledgeable professional with advanced abilities in applying construction economics (quantity surveying, design and synthesis) and related inter-disciplinary principles independently to specific management systems problems of society. One of the main objectives of this process is to develop a person with advanced capability to conduct construction cost engineering research of an exploratory nature. The qualification will also promote lifelong learning as well as an aptitude for training other students in similar fields.

The research problem, its justification, process and outcome is reported in a dissertation that complies with the generally accepted norms for research at that level. They will also demonstrate a high level of overall knowledge in that area, ranging from fundamental concepts to advanced theoretical or applied knowledge.
