The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with the ability to discuss, analyse and apply the theory and methodology of Urban Studies and to be participate in current debates in Urban Studies at an advanced level. He/she will be able to apply this knowledge to issues pertinent to the field of Urban Studies in the Southern African region. In addition, a qualifying learner will be able to plan, design, and execute research in an authentic context, using appropriate methodology, and report on research findings. He/she will be able to understand, interpret, analyse and present research data and critically evaluate research designs employed in social science research.

Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification: - To equip students with a specialised understanding of the issues and problems pertinent to the visual arts and design as fields of human endeavour and a domain of research, debate and artistic creation.

The purpose of this programme is to enable candidates to acquire adequate research skills in Xhosa within the Faculty of Arts. This requires attention to the following three important aspects: - A broadening and deepening of a student's knowledge in the Xhosa disciplines as specified. This is achieved through course work leading to detailed literature surveys.

(a) To provide learners with linguistic knowledge which will help them to research scientifically on literature or grammar.

IsiZulu aims at equipping first and second language students with the skills to analyse critically and scientifically aspect of language, literature and culture. Students are taught creative literary skill, the scientific analysis of literature as well as the phonetics, phonology and syntax of the isiZulu language. Second language students acquire speaking, reading and writing skills and are introduced to traditional and modern literature. This is in line with the new language policy of multilingualism. There is a great challenge for students in the form of lexicography both theoretical and practical components for those who wish to become lexicographers, terminographers, translators and interpreters, editors, language planners etc. From an economic point of view the most important task of the translator is to develop and promote the translation industry. In this context, we think of the accreditation body for language workers by PANSALB.

The purpose of the dissertation qualification is to provide learners with advanced and specialised knowledge of and research skills in the field of Audiology. The qualification builds on prior graduate level knowledge and skills, in order to enhance competence in the management of people with communication disorders and their families. In this manner, the qualification promotes the learner's professional development, and enhance the range of possibilities for employment.
