Purpose and rationale

Purpose

This qualification is intended to enable qualified learners to apply integrated technical knowledge/skills and advanced analysis and problem-solving to a particular specialisation in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying and property development and other related fields, through involvement in an applied research project This qualification is also intended for learners specialising in the field of Building Science in the construction and property industries and the Construction Management and Quantity Surveying professions.

Rationale

Learners achieving this qualification will be competent to independently perform services relevant to contract procurement, financial and cost management and property development This qualification is designed to develop specialised knowledge through a research programme and also develop researchers who can contribute to the development of knowledge at an advanced level. This qualification will further contribute to the development of an advanced capability to conduct research in this field thereby contributing to lifelong learning of learners and stimulate social-economic development.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Science Honours in Construction Management, National Qualifications Framework(NQF) Level 8.
  • Bachelor of Science Honours in Quantity Surveying, NQF Level 8.

Qualification rules

This qualification comprises of compulsory at National Qualifications Framework(NQF) Level 9 totalling at 180 Credits.

  • Dissertation: Building Science, 180 Credits.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Provide financial management skills and create awareness of entrepreneurship.
  2. Advise on investment in property.
  3. Prepare tender and contract documentation and administer building contracts.
  4. Analyse financial and cost statements for control and decision making purposes.
  5. Analyse and select the appropriate sources of finance for business enterprises.
  6. Prepare a comprehensive business plan for a commercial venture.
  7. Determine market value of property and undertake market study for development purposes.
  8. Compile and analyse feasibility report for property development.
  9. Take off quantities and prepare tender documentation for building, civil engineering and electrical and mechanical engineering works.
  10. Apply knowledge of law of contracts and standard building and civil engineering contracts.
  11. Post contract administration and preparation of final accounts.

Associated assessment criteria

The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be used in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes

  • Identify, solve problems, make responsible decisions and demonstrate critical thinking as well as application of management, costs, financial and legal principles relevant to property development, and contract procurement, administration and finalisation.
  • Communicate and work effectively with the development teams in the design, construction.
  • Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information with regard to property development, and contract procurement and administration.

Integrated Assessment

The integrated assessment is culminated in a research report that requires the candidate to not only integrate the various fields of knowledge of the discipline itself but also the application of research methodology. In addition to the report colloquiums will also provide opportunities for integrated formative and summative assessment. Although the final report will be for summative purposes there will be various interventions with the candidate during the process to address formative assessment. The research component is assessed by means of a dissertation as well as an article that needs to be prepared for final submission and assessment. Assessment and moderation policies of the institution are applied in exit level subjects and the dissertation must be moderated externally. Research is conducted and developed in a specialised area and engage in the transfer of technology in the field of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying. The research skills are assessed by means of a dissertation and articles.
