Bio-informatics is an inter-disciplinary field and is ideally suited to a broad range of science graduates, including biologists, computer scientists and mathematicians. The qualification will provide courses that are suitable for learners from a range of scientific backgrounds and will provide them with valuable training to enable them to pursue a career in the rapidly growing bio-pharmaceutical industry or the basis upon which to proceed to further research in Bio-informatics.

The qualification develops research skills under the guidance of an experienced scientist with specialisation in either Botany, Zoology, Conservation, Ethnobiology or Biology. It provides practical experience and development of skills in all aspects of the scientific method including the identification of a problem, literature review, project planning, data collection and analysis, report writing and oral presentation of results.

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualified scientists who can identify, evaluate and address problems associated with the biological and/or earth sciences in South African and international context at the highest levels. Through the acquisition of appropriate competence and research ability they will be able to enter a range of professional and entrepreneurial opportunities.
