Purpose and Rationale of the Qualification: - To extend and deepen the student's familiarity with the content of theatre, drama and performance studies as a field of research and debate in the humanities (including the social sciences) equipping them with the advanced intellectual and cognitive skills to solve relatively complex problems, utilising appropriate methods and theories.

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with highly specialised applied competence in the mastering, analysis, interpretation and application of Employment Relation Management practices and principles in an organisational context. The learners should develop advanced intellectual and practical knowledge in preparation for a career in the Employment Relations field and as basis for further learning. The learner should develop the ability to do advanced research across the Employment Relation Management discipline. The learners should be able to reflect on their decisions and applications of Employment Relation Management as major discipline to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of organisational and individual performance improvement.

To develop at postgraduate level the reading, writing, thinking and analytical skills of learners. Critical, interpretative and evaluative abilities of learners will also be developed, within the context of more specialised and more intensive courses than were offered at undergraduate level.

Purpose: - To provide learner with a Post-Graduate knowledge of a range of texts in comparative literature with special emphasis on African and Southern African texts.

The aim of the BA Honours English (Literature) qualification is to deepen learners' knowledge of literature beyond the undergraduate level by making them familiar with the basic principles underlying the study of literature (with criticism) as an academic discipline.

The purposes are more extensively pursued within a three-track system that allows learners to focus upon the three related main areas of study making up the discipline of English as it is understood today: Language/Writing; Literary Studies; Cultural Studies. Learners may emphasise those tracks within English Studies that suit their vocational interests and support these with a selected range of ancillary and substitute courses from other disciplines (e.g. language skills to strengthen their Language/Writing interests; media and communication courses to strengthen their cultural studies interests; comparative literature courses to strengthen their literary interests). Learners may also select all of the offerings within English in order to give themselves a thorough grounding in all the elements of contemporary English studies.
