Purpose and rationale
Purpose
- To provide learner with a Post-Graduate knowledge of a range of texts in comparative literature with special emphasis on African and Southern African texts.
- Applied competences in critical analysis and the application of critical theory.
- To provide a centre of awareness in the Eastern Cape for insight and discussion of a range of diversely culturally based texts.
- To prepare students for the qualification Master of Arts (MA) in Pan African letters.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):.
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- Bachelor of Arts in Language and Literature, Level 7.

Exit level outcomes
The learner on completion of this qualification will
1 Write and deliver critical seminar papers and thus be equipped for engagement in wider critical discourse
2 Have gained a wide comparative knowledge of various literary genres across national and cultural boundaries
3 Be able to carry out independent and self-motivate research that will allow entry to the MA programme
4 Demonstrate clear analytical skills (in competent prose style, where written) of major texts
5 Demonstrate the ability to creatively interact with lecturing staff and other learners in group discussions

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1
- Fellow learners and lecturing staff will have to be persuaded of the soundness of both preparation and delivery of such papers.
Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2
- Learners will be able to demonstrate in writing and in discussion that they understand the various potentials and conventions of the main forms of writing as these been explored and revealed in a range of cultural traditions.
Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3
- Fellow learners and lecturing staff must be convinced that the research habits underlying the learner's written and verbal discourses are disciplined, appropriate to specific tasks, creative and valuably self-directed.
Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4
- Learners will be able to discuss texts using various methodological approaches so as to exhibit multi-perspective insights into texts they are studying. Their analytical skills must include the obvious capacity for self-critical thinking, which will be present in all forms of discourse.
Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5
- Learners must show the ability to collaborate with others towards establishing progressively more holistic agreements regarding the issues under examination and their meanings in relation and learning.
Integrated Assessment
- Formative assessment of oral presentations, written papers, and contributions to seminars and panel discussions.
- Summative assessment by way of a final written examination covering each module.
The grade mark is calculated giving proper consideration to both modes of assessment.
