- A learner who achieves qualifications in this qualification will be a competent reader, writer and speaker in Afrikaans.

The primary purpose of this qualification is to develop the learner's applied competence in more advanced conceptualisation, critical reasoning, problem solving and processes of analysis and evaluation pertaining to the structure, usage and spread of the Afrikaans language, in historical context, and Afrikaans literature in its major genres and pertaining to Dutch literature by way of comparison to Afrikaans.

Afrikaans and Nederlands is an academic and broadly vocational discipline which aims to equip learners with an understanding of the structure and function of literature, language and culture in society. Learners will be provided with an understanding of the vision and limitations of Afrikaans and Nederlands as a discipline. Learners will also be provided with the skills to conduct analysis and research on Afrikaans and Dutch literature, language and culture. Such education is crucial in South Africa given the multilingual and multicultural nature of our society, and for intercultural communication. Learners with qualifications in the programme will be able to work in publishing companies, the media, archives, education, the civil service (e.g. communications and language planning) and as language partitions (e.g. translating, editing).

The aim of this qualification is to provide an opportunity for learners to broaden their knowledge in Afrikaans and Netherlands within the Faculty of Arts. This provides an opportunity to read extensively, to become acquainted with some of the classic texts in the Afrikaans and Netherlands discipline, to become involved in a conversation with its most important thinkers and to take part in these debates with confidence. The solid basis that is acquired in this way prepares the learner for postgraduate research. This provides an opportunity not only to broaden but also to deepen insight in the discipline as specified.

The purpose of the qualification is to unravel the value of the Ancient Near Eastern material culture for the modern civilisation. It provides students with the opportunity to engage with the interpretations, methods and techniques of this ancient material in a responsible manner. It builds on the undergraduate knowledge, skills and competencies enabling the students to intellectual independence. The qualification equips the students to do independent research, developing reading, writing, interpretive and evaluative skills in order to write articles as a preamble towards Master's and Doctoral research. In this manner the students could contribute to expose the modern world to treasures of the ancient world, especially in the Middle Eastern region.
