A Bachelor of Arts Honours (Afrikaans) learner will be able to
- Demonstrate his/her drawing on a wide range of theoretical and practical skills derived from literature and linguistics.
- Have knowledge of the major literary/linguistic discipline with depth in more than one area.
- Have limited specialisation in a given literary direction.
- Conduct basic research across a major discipline in linguistic or literature.

- Generate contextually relevant interpretations of literary texts by using recognised hermeneutic methods;
- Use secondary resources to interpret texts in a way relevant to the broader social context;
- Explain the cultural and social features of the communities behind texts and identify the differences between those;
- and contemporary communities, where necessary;
- Use historical sources to interpret the history of interpretation in their respective contexts.
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge in a specific area of Afrikaans language and literature;
