The purpose of the qualification is, in one or more sub-fields within the Physical, Mathematical, Computer, Life, Earth, and Environmental Sciences: - To produce Science Graduates who have a systematic and coherent body of knowledge and an understanding of underlying concepts and principles.

This qualification will produce teachers of mathematics, lecturers and researchers for universities and other scientific institutions.

1. To enable students to acquire a sound mathematical basis for higher level study of abstract mathematics, such as mathematical analysis, algebra, topology or applied analysis.

To develop and empower postgraduate learners who are going to (i) pursue a career in Mathematics teaching and lecturing, (ii) do Masters studies and research in Mathematical, Physical and Computer Sciences, (iii) apply Mathematics in those disciplines and areas of life that require high-level mathematical skills. Prospective teachers to be equipped with the following skills: problem-solving; abstraction and interpretation; communication; mathematical language; critical thinking and innovation.

This qualification aims to provide learners with specialised knowledge in Mathematics through study in depth; to equip them with knowledge of research methodology, and the ability to solve problems and develop theory through independent work critical thinking, by the use of appropriate theory, methods and technique from different parts of mathematics. These learners should be good communicators in spoken and written English, to both expert and non-expert audiences.
