The purpose of the qualification is to provide qualified learners who are in possession of a three-year institutions qualification or a four-year Technikon qualification in Geology with additional knowledge in the fields of Geotechnical Engineering and Environmental Science to enable them to effectively communicate with engineers, planners and other scientists and to facilitate the investigation and research of problems related to the interaction between development/construction projects and the geological environment. The learner is empowered with basic applied competence in the fields of Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics, Hydrogeology, Environmental studies, Report writing, Project management and Business practices, further aimed at lifelong learning through upgrading of knowledge and skills.

1. To compound and expand the learners knowledge in the field of Entomology

The first purpose of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) (Entomology) qualification is to provide qualifiers with lower post-graduate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a number of fields of entomological science that provide for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

To produce graduates with adequate knowledge and skills to meet the requirements for international academic recognition and to enable professional registration (if appropriate) in the fields of entomology. Graduates will be able to contribute positively to future vocational and/or academic needs both locally (Southern Africa) and internationally through their ability to apply scientific methods in supervised research and/or problem solving, and communicate and/or implement investigative research findings effectively in a diversity of fields within the zoological sciences, for example, as general entomology, animal systematists, applied entomologists, environmental consultants and environmental managers.

The aim is to expose learners to disciplines within the environmental sciences. It is designed for learners who wish to obtain a background in environmental management and to acquire skills that are necessary to address specific environmental questions faced by civil society.

The primary purpose of these qualifications is to provide Honours Bachelor of Arts (BA) (Environmental Management) graduates with systematic knowledge, specialised skills and theoretical competence in environmental management.

The primary purpose of these qualifications is to provide Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours graduates with systematic knowledge, specialised skills and theoretical competence in environmental management.

To provide graduates with a specialized knowledge in Environmental Science through study in depth; to equip them with practical and applied knowledge of research methodology and to produce in them the ability to solve problems, both independently and in teams. To ensure that students graduate with the ability to compare and evaluate information from disparate sources and sub-disciplines in order to make sound decisions and judgements. These graduates should be good competent in oral presentation, and communicate well in spoken and written English, to both expert and non-expert audiences.

The purpose of the Bachelor of Science Honours in Environmental Sciences is to prepare learners for research-based postgraduate studies. As such, the curriculum of this qualification provides learners with a sound understanding of the research process, and with the philosophical foundations necessary to understand how scientific knowledge is created. It also provides an opportunity to carry out research while under supervision.
