The purpose of the Master of Medicine in Cardio-Thoracic qualification is to produce learners with specialist training in Cardiothoracic Surgery, who are a specialist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. It is also to produce learners with expertise in research, which includes the ability to evaluate and implement research findings in the practice of Cardiothoracic Surgery specialisation and the ability to guide junior learners if the learner is in an educational setting usually as a component of work-integrated learning. Hence, the learners have competence in the practice of Cardio-thoracic Surgery and can contribute to the need for specialist practice in the health sciences in South Africa.

This qualification forms part of the credentialing process, for medical practitioners as Specialists in Chemical Pathology. It aims to provide sufficient training in Chemical Pathology to enable competent practice as a Chemical Pathologist in either the public or private sector. The qualification is recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa for the purposes of registration as a Chemical Pathologist. Learners must hold an HPCSA-approved registrar post in a teaching hospital during the training period that is usually 4 years.

This qualification provides graduates with knowledge, practical skills and applied competence in Chemical Pathology sufficient to allow registration with Health Professions Council of SA as a specialist Chemical Pathologist. It aims to provide graduates with the foundation for continued personal and intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and for contributing to society at large through advanced patient care, innovation, scholarship and leadership in the field of Chemical Pathology.
