The purpose of this qualification is to provide the learner with the following: - Acquire skills, knowledge, attitudes and values that will improve the standard of living, human development, productivity and opportunities for all citizens, with and without barriers and from all walks of life.

The purpose of the Higher Certificate in Applied Accounting qualification is to provide entry into the field of Accounting. The qualification aims to empower learners to demonstrate problem-solving capabilities, initiative, and accountability and conduct appropriate and professional academic contexts. Furthermore, effective application of the principles and theory of accounting practice are emphasised as a basis for entry into additional professional training, or as a basis for articulation opportunities into cognate fields for further study.

The Higher Certificate in Architectural Practice is an "entry-level higher education qualification" (HEQSF, 2013:21). The purpose of the qualification is to equip learners with the skills, competencies, and academic knowledge required to practice in the Built Environment as a Candidate Architectural Draughtsperson. The qualification is intended for learners who want to obtain an expeditious professional qualification; learners who are curious about the profession and who want to spend a year constructively and/or learners who do not yet meet the requirements to enter a degree or Diploma qualification. Awareness of practicing architecture with social and environmental consciousness, practicing collaboratively, responding to all aspects of context, and operating with an entrepreneurial mindset are emphasised. An environment that encourages inquiry and exploration into innovative building technologies sets the learning context. Learners will be equipped to enter architectural practice and meaningfully contribute at the Draughtsperson level; or pursue further education in architecture or a related field.

The South African Qualifications Authority Act, 38 of 1995, states that the objectives of the National Qualifications Framework are to "... to create an integrated national framework for learning achievements; ... facilitate access to, and mobility and progression within education, training and career paths; ... enhance the quality of education and training; ... accelerate the redress of past unfair discrimination in education, training and employment opportunities; and thereby ... contribute to the full personal development of each learner and the social and economic development of the nation at large". The postulation of this qualification is informed by the priority of equity. The qualification is intended to reflect the entirety of skills possessed by any particular learner, regardless of that learner's prior educational background. Moreover, it is in the interest of equity that this qualification is capable of reflecting the unique sets of skills of individual learners, and individual needs, potentialities and talents are accommodated by this qualification in the interest of equity.
