Purpose and rationale

  1. To produce skilled practitioners who can fulfil the information needs of various sectors and communities in South Africa, and in comparable societies with specific reference to records and archival management.
  2. To realise a high degree of sustained proficiency in both scholarship and professional training at all postgraduate levels in Information Studies relative to managing records and archival information.
  3. Consequently this programme is both academic and vocational in its thrust.

Entry requirements and RPL

No specific learning with regard to the qualification in records and archival management are required, although students will have to have obtained general academic proficiency at the Bachelors degree for entry into this qualification.

Exit level outcomes

A specialised level for Records and Archival Management to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required at this level;

the capacity and ability to exercise professional judgement concerning tasks and responsibilities in library, archival and information work. More particularly, the programme in Information Studies addresses the following:

  1. Fosters an awareness of and teaches information literacy as a core competency within the university and for lifelong purposes
  2. Educates and trains information professionals who are skilled, critical, perceptive, pro-active and adaptive regarding the information requirements of South Africa and other comparable societies in the area if archival and records management
  3. Inculcates multi-faceted research skills and the ability to present and report on research findings
  4. Assists information professionals who are service practitioners to develop and enhance their competencies through in-service training and continuing education and training programmes.

These are the various methods that will be deployed. Different assignments are assessed differently in a system of continuous assessment. Final examination of modules is holistic, seeking to see how learners are able to integrate content and skills more generally.

  1. Credits obtained from modules could readily be granted in other programmes and qualifications acquired could be used as means of access to another programme.
  2. Entry to the programme at any level is possible provided the requirements for admission have been met (see Q8). In some instances it will be possible for learners to be given the opportunity to attain the entry requirements should their prior qualifications not have enabled them to do that.
