Purpose and rationale

This qualification recognises prior learning. It recognises those who have made a distinguished, original contribution to town and regional planning practice, over a number of years, through work of major, technological, economic or social significance.

The qualification enhances the career of the graduate by conferring on him/her the highest academic degree of the University in the field of study.

Further, the purpose of the qualification is to recognise a graduate who has produced a substantial body of knowledge in the field that is valued nationally and internationally.

Entry requirements and RPL

Ability to conceive, plan, execute and write up for publication original work in their field; such work shall have been published or accepted for publication.

Formally Accredited Learning and Other Qualities

The typical applicant has a substantial body of significant and original published work and has Postgraduate Degrees of the University, or equivalent University-approved qualification(s), of several years' standing, depending on the qualification held - consult the admission information of the University.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Applicants who fall outside of the normal admissions process who can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the University that they have a qualification or experiential- or work based learning which has taken the learner to an equivalent level of a qualification specified above (under Formally Accredited Learning), may be considered for admission and/or for the recognition of prior accredited and/or prior experiential learning.

Exit level outcomes

  1. The qualifying learner demonstrates, through the cumulative impact of original work of publishable standard, a distinguished contribution to knowledge.
  2. The qualifying learner demonstrates an understanding, with a high degree of sophistication, of the construction of knowledge within the field and applies that understanding to knowledge creation and/or application.

The qualifying learner has produced a substantial and co-ordinated body of distinguished original work, of publishable standard, for assessment.

Integrated Assessment

The integrated assessment is the assessment of a set of co-ordinated publications (or work accepted for publication) presented by the applicant.

Entry to the qualification

The typical applicant has a Master of Town and Regional Planning degree of the University, or an equivalent University-approved qualification, plus five years experience; or a Doctor of Philosophy in Town and Regional Planning of the University, or equivalent University-approved qualification, plus three years experience.

This is a senior doctorate and as such is one of the highest qualifications of the University. A graduate may proceed to another senior doctorate of the University.
