Doctor of Philosophy in Science

Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to enable post-doctoral students to achieve a research degree. This will benefit both the learner as well as society.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

This qualification allows for Recognition of Prior Learning for a leaner to attain entry/access to this qualification and to gain exemptions from some qualification requirements. Where an entry criterion applies, a prospective leaner may use prior learning experience in the field of public health to gain entry to the qualification. Submission of a portfolio of evidence as proof of practical experience from an appropriate setting will enable the learner admission to the qualification. Access to the qualification through recognition of prior learning is possible if the learner produces evidence of having achieved the appropriate outcomes level of knowledge, skill, and competence. Access to the qualification is achievable if the learner can provide formal proof of credits earned towards the outcomes from an accredited service provider.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

• Master of Philosophy in Science NQF Level 9.

This qualification consists of compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework Level 10 totalling 360 Credits.

• Thesis, 360 Credits.

1. Demonstrate the capacity to design, conduct and write up research that is original, relevant and contribute to knowledge and insight into the field of study and that can respectably stand alongside refereed and published research in the same field and have practical application in the societal context.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of scientific procedures and an ability to cope with research techniques.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of literature related to the research problem.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1

• Write research proposals that indicate that learners are able to identify a problem or problems in education formulate research problems and subsets of problems, and suggest possible solutions to the problem(s).
• Formulate hypotheses
• Know, select and utilise research instruments that are relevant in the research of a specific problem in education.
• Select and use appropriate data analysis methods to interpret the findings of the investigation.
• Conduct fieldwork during the actual investigation.
• Evaluate and interpret findings.
• Report the findings of the investigation, and formulate recommendation that emanate from the findings.
• Create a new model that can be applied to solve the problem investigation.

• Identify and analyse different scientific procedures in terms of the problem being researched

• Critically read, interpret and analyse literature from different sources.
• Search for literature on the identified research problem.
• Compare the writings of different authors on the same related topic.
• Synthesize reading material on the topic being researched.
• Draw conclusions from different readings and indicate anomalies.
• Create a theoretical framework provided by the literature review.
• Create a new model/approach/theory that is applicable to the research problem.
• Compile a complete bibliography.
