Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematical Statistics
The purpose of this qualification is to train mathematical statisticians who will be able to do research work in any and every sector of the South African economy. As such they will be able to lecture in both Mathematical Statistics and Statistics. These mathematical statisticians should also be able to work as researchers, extending the frontiers of statistics in all directions.

Purpose and rationale
The purpose of this qualification is to train mathematical statisticians who will be able to do research work in any and every sector of the South African economy. As such they will be able to lecture in both Mathematical Statistics and Statistics. An Masters degree in Mathematical Statistics or any other indication of sufficient prior learning.

- Knowledge and experience of research methodology

Assessment criteria will be based on testing the learners knowledge of the chosen field of study and on his/her thesis. In addition other aspects that will be tested are:

- Ability to formulate an hypothesis
- Ability to work on one 's own
- Ability to collect and relate published contributions
- Ability to develop and utilize new ideas
- Ability to write about these ideas in a clear and concise manner
- Ability to design and manage an experiment
- Ability to draw the correct conclusions and apply these to the hypothesis
