Purpose and rationale
Purpose
The qualifying learner can conduct independent research in the field of Language Practice, contribute to new knowledge in the area and produce innovative solutions in the form of a model, artefact, process, or similar outcome. The research problem, its justification, process and outcome are reported in a thesis, which complies with the generally accepted norms for research at this level.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

- Demonstrate familiarity with relevant and recent trends in technologies, techniques, models and theories in the chosen field through the survey of listed and cited literature and exposition of the research.
- Correctly analyse, explain and juxtapose in oral presentations and written record of research the models, principles, theories, techniques and methodologies in the chosen field.
- Fully and correctly justify the use of literature surveys/experimentation/correlation/casual analysis in oral presentations and the written record of research.
- Clearly identify, detail and define the research problem is in the research proposal.
- The stated hypothesis directs the investigation.
- Logical interpretation of data reflects a clear understanding of the relationship between facts in the study and the ability to evaluate contradictory information.
- Correctly and appropriately use Information sources, including a range of media.
- Effectively apply information technology skills in information searches, data analyses, data presentation, and the production of the dissertation.
- Correctly apply the appropriate mathematical and statistical methods to quantitative and qualitative data.
- Make valid inferences, interpretations and conclusions from measurements and statistical analyses.
- Correctly and effectively apply language and numeracy skills in communicating the research problem, its investigation, outcome and recommendations.
