Purpose and rationale

Purpose

Qualifying learners would display applied competence in research methodology, and the proper written communication in the research process and findings. The learner should be able to reflect on his/her research decisions and applications to access the effect thereof in the holistic context of research in the sport industry.

Rationale

The rationale of this qualification is to offer a national or international learner with a relevant Master Degree who comply with the entry requirements the opportunity to complete this qualification within the African Olympic Centre to be established in the one of the institutions in South Africa.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution accepts Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as an integral part of the academic qualification and as an initiative to support transformation of the education and training system in South Africa. It is acknowledged that all learning has value and the institution accepts the challenge to assess prior learning and award credit that is aligned to University programmes to promote lifelong learning.

Qualification rules

This qualification comprises of compulsory module at National Qualifications Framework(NQF) Level 10 totalling at 360 Credits.

Compulsory Module, Level 10, 360 Credits

  • Research Thesis, 360 Credits.

Exit level outcomes

1.Show evidence of independent and original scientific work.

2.Contribute to knowledge of and insight into the subject discipline as well as the field of research.

3.Display applied competence in research methodology, and the proper written communication in the research process and findings.

4.Reflect on research decisions and applications through the presentation of the research at seminars, conferences as well as well as publications in accredited journals to access the effect thereof in the holistic context of research in the sport industry.

Associated assessment criteria

  • Apply flexible, independent thinking processes, displaying an openness for new ideas.
  • Conduct fundamental research of an original nature in the Sport Science field/discipline; thereby making a contribution to knowledge and/or insight in the field/discipline.
  • Identify, assess, formulate and solve problems scientifically.
  • Demonstrate a fundamental scientific, critical research and service-orientated attitude; scientific and academic values, like objectivity, structure, reliability, validity, accuracy, coherence, logic and ethical obedience.
  • Communicate in a structured manner, including written and oral presentations, as well as the facilitation of scientific discussions.
  • Generate well-founded ideas, which should then be structured, articulated and communicated to informed members of society.
  • Integrate technology responsibly during the problem solving process.
  • Collect, disseminate and interpret relevant data and information, as and when needed by individuals/organisation in the Sport Science field/discipline, as well as in society in general.
  • Construct a well-founded knowledge framework within the field of research, but particularly with regards to the Sport Science field/discipline.
  • Advanced scientific research, specifically in the Sport Science field/discipline, while functioning successfully within a team, which could be of an interdisciplinary nature.

Integrated Assessment

A research thesis will be submitted as proof of applied competence and successful completion of this qualification. The feedback from the supervisor will therefore be regarded as formative assessment. The final acceptance of the thesis will be regarded as summative assessment.
