The purpose of the qualification is to provide an opportunity for candidates to develop skills to do independent research in environmental science.
Rationale
This will assist the South African nation with highly qualified people who are competent to do research.

On completion the student shall
- Display expert, highly specialised scholastic and advanced research skills in the environmental science discipline and be able to perform complex and highly advanced procedures across disciplines in highly specialised and unpredictable contexts.
- Possess in-depth knowledge in a complex and specialised area of environmental science, be capable of information processing at the level of generation, evaluation and synthesis of highly abstract information and concepts; and be capable of creating responses to abstract problems that expand or redefine existing knowledge.
- Communicate effectively, in both oral and written modes, with peers and the broader environmental science community using the appropriate structure, style and graphic support.
- Assume responsibility for planning, resourcing and managing and optimising all aspects of processes within complex and unpredictable contexts and assume complete accountability for determining, achieving and evaluating and applying personal and/or group output.

- Highly specialized, expert scholastic and advanced research skills are displayed, in the environmental science discipline and complex and highly advanced procedures are performed across disciplines in highly specialised and unpredictable contexts.
- In-depth knowledge in a complex and specialised area of environmental science is demonstrated, information is processes at the level of generation, evaluation and synthesis of highly abstract information and concepts; and responses to abstract problems are created that expand or redefine existing knowledge.
- Oral and written modes of communication using the appropriate structure, style and graphic support are effectively demonstrated with peers and the broader environmental science community.
- Responsibility for planning, resourcing and managing is demonstrated and all aspects of processes within complex and unpredictable contexts are optimised.
- Complete accountability for determination, achievement and evaluation of personal and/or group output is demonstrated.
