Purpose and rationale
Purpose
The Doctor of Philosophy in Economics provides learners with academic research in the field of Economics and to promote individual and institutional capacity building. The qualification enables learners to:
- Conceptualise and implement research initiatives and formulation in the specialised field.
- Apply methods and research techniques to specialised knowledge and theory under study.
- Produce independent research output for examination, scholarly debates and publications.
Rationale
It provides Doctoral-level study for learners who have specialised in one of three different streams at the Masters level, namely:
- General Economics,
- Transport Economics,
- Financial Markets It will advance their pursuit of knowledge.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
This qualification allows for Recognition of Prior Learning for a leaner to attain entry/access to this qualification and to gain exemptions from some qualification requirements. Where an entry criterion applies, a prospective learner may use prior learning experience in the field of public health to gain entry to the qualification. Submission of a portfolio of evidence as proof of practical experience from an appropriate setting will enable the learner admission to the qualification. Access to the qualification through recognition of prior learning is possible if the learner produces evidence of having achieved the appropriate outcomes level of knowledge, skill, and competence. Access to the qualification is achievable if the learner can provide formal proof of credits earned towards the outcomes from an accredited service provider.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- Masters of Philosophy in Economics or in a relevant field or discipline, NQF Level 9.

Qualification rules
This qualification consists of the following compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework Level 10 totalling 360 Credits.
- Thesis, 360 Credits.
Exit level outcomes
- Approach problems in a scientific manner.
- Present original research findings/results and recommendations in a thesis that meets the theoretical and technical requirement of a scientific investigation.
- Demonstrate sensitivity for and ability to assimilate cultural and ethical issues.
- Express knowledgeable, well-versed opinions on topical issues forming part of the current debate on practical problems in the specific field of specialisation.
- Apply computer proficiency in problem-solving, research methodology and the presentation of the findings of an independent scientific research survey.
