Purpose and rationale
The Doctoral programme in Chemistry aims to develop the research-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in Chemistry of learners to the highest level, in preparation for a career as a leader:

As a qualified professional chemistry and research the learner will be able to
- Respond to the needs of society in chemical and related matters.
- Appreciate the value of education and Chemistry to society.
Being basically an academic programme, the programme also aims to develop lifelong learners and caters for the career prospects of graduates as professional chemists.

Exit level outcomes
- Ability to identify, assess, formulate and solve complex problems of a chemical nature creatively, from their knowledge of the different domains of Chemistry.
- Demonstrate of applied competence, i.e.
- That chemical knowledge and skills can be applied to solve real problems of a chemical nature, either individually or as part of a team.
- That process skills can be used to investigate chemical phenomena related to the material world.
- Effective communication using appropriate language and media, ability to prepare illustrative and interpretive scientific reports.
- Use of safe working practice in the chemical field.

- Ability to use scientific knowledge and skills to support responsible decision making of a chemical and nonchemical nature.
- Ability to solve problems individually and as part of a project team.
- Demonstration of an understanding of ethical issues related to the chemical sciences.
- Organising and managing oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively.
- Collecting, analysing, organising and critically evaluating information.
- Demonstrating an understanding of the material world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation.

Associated assessment criteria
A range of formative and summative assessment methods, but mostly workplace assessments, project work singly and in groups, reflection, on oral examination, and a dissertation, will be used integratively to assess whether the specified outcomes have been achieved.
