Purpose and rationale
The qualification is to provide the learner with higher, expert post-graduate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a number of fields of Botanical Science.
It also provides the nation with Doctoral graduates in the Botanical Sciences. Such graduates can feed into the country's needs for high-level scientists and managers in the spheres of specialized Botany as well as specialists and experts in sub-fields therein.

The Learner are expected to demonstrate the following
a) The capacity to design, conduct and write up research that is original, relevant and contribute to knowledge and insight into the field of study. His/Her work can be referred by external expert in the discipline and be publishable.
b) An understanding of literature related to the research problem
c) An understanding of scientific procedures and an ability to cope with research techniques.
d) The learner will also be able to undertake her/his research fully independently under the guidance of supervisors, and possibly make new contributions to values and attitudes in Botany.

Integrated Assessment
1.Write research proposal that indicate that learners are able to identify a problem or problems in Botany formulate research problems and suggest possible solutions.
A. Critically read, interpret and analyse literature from different sources
B. Search for literature on the identified research problem
2.Formulate hypothesis
3.Know, select and utilise research instruments that are relevant in the research of a specific problem in botany.
4.Conduct fieldwork or laboratory experiments during the actual investigation.
5.Critically, evaluate and interpret findings
6.Report the findings of the investigation, and formulate recommendations that emanate from the findings.
7.Draw conclusion from different readings and indicate anomalies
8.Create a new model that is applicable to the research problem
9.Compile a complete bibliography
Progression and comparability
Articulation options
i) Recognition of prior learning towards either core and/or fundamental credits where appropriate and/or towards elective credits.
ii) Certain horizontal articulation possibilities may exist with other PhD degrees in biological sciences.
iii) In terms of vertical articulation, learners will be able to proceed to a post-doctoral qualification in an appropriate biological science or equivalent both at Fort Hare, or in other South African universities and other tertiary institutions elsewhere.
