Purpose and rationale

Purpose

Pharmaceutical Science is a major field of study dealing with the discovery, formulation, design and testing of drug products to improve the health status of society. The aim of the programme is to train highly skilled researchers in the Pharmaceutical Sciences (i.e. Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacy Practice).

Learners will be competent to apply original advanced research techniques in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, to initiate and lead research, to disseminate the results of the research, to apply the finding of the research to new situations and distinguish themselves as leaders in the field of the Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Rationale

Learners who have completed this programme have the education and training to take a leading role in contributing national and international endeavours to improve the health status of society and to raise the status of South Africa as a centre of excellence in applied research.

  1. Initiate original research and apply advanced research methodology.
  2. Provide effective and collective leadership in the pharmaceutical sciences in the advancement and further development of knowledge in the specialised field of study.
  3. Identify define and provide solutions to complex problems, and advise authoritatively on such matter pertaining to the specialised field of study.
  4. Apply and implement original and highly specialised knowledge of the field of study to the development of the pharmaceutical sciences.
  5. Initiate and co-ordinate continuing research activities.
  6. Expand and redefine existing knowledge, making sound evaluations on the basis of independently generated criteria.
  7. Lead and motivate others in the specialised field of research, working with and within a group towards defined outcomes.

Associated assessment criteria

  1. Mastery with the appropriate methods of research.
  2. Sufficient acquaintance with the relevant literature.
  3. An ability to present the results using an appropriate literary style and presentation free from errors.
  4. A substantial and original contribution to knowledge in the discipline, the substance of which is worthy of publication in a scholarly journal or book.

Integrated Assessment

The candidates should provide evidence of a specialised and high level of competence, knowledge and integrity. Formative Assessment is provided on written and oral research reports. Summative Assessment is provided on the basis of a thesis. The thesis will be presented for examination at least two years (24 months) after registration and preparation, in consultation with the supervisor.
