Purpose and rationale

Purpose

Upon qualifying learners will be able to teach, design programmes and supervise postgraduate studies in music and musicology up to the highest academic level. Learners will also be able to carry out further original research at the highest level.

Rationale

This qualification will provide the learner with a doctoral post-graduate level in the study of music and musicology; with preference being given to topics in fields of African (and related) music. Learners will make a profound contribution to music study in this region through an independent research thesis.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

This qualification allows for Recognition of Prior Learning for a leaner to attain entry/access to this qualification and to gain exemptions from some qualification requirements. Where an entry criterion applies, a prospective leaner may use prior learning experience in the field of public health to gain entry to the qualification. Submission of a portfolio of evidence as proof of practical experience from an appropriate setting will enable the learner admission to the qualification. Access to the qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning is possible if the learner produces evidence of having achieved the appropriate outcomes level of knowledge, skill, and competence. Access to the qualification is achievable if the learner can provide formal proof of credits earned towards the outcomes from an accredited service provider.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • A cognate Master of Music, NQF Level 9.

Qualification rules

This qualification consists of compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework Level 10 totalling 360 Credits

  • Thesis, 360 Credits.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Design, conduct and write up the research that is original, relevant and contributes to knowledge and insight in the field of study, and that can respectably stand alongside refereed and published research in the same field and have practical application in the societal context.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of scientific procedures and an ability to cope with research techniques.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of literature related to the research problem.
  4. Write a linguistically acceptable thesis.

Associated assessment criteria

The following Associated Assessment Criteria will assess the Exit Level Outcomes in an integrated manner

  • Write research proposals to identify a problem or problems in music and musicology.
  • Formulate research problems and subjects of issues, and suggest possible solutions to the problem(s).
  • Formulate a hypothesis.
  • Select and utilise research instruments that are relevant in the research of a specific problem in music and musicology.
  • Select and use appropriate data analysis methods to interpret the findings of the investigation.
  • Conduct fieldwork during the actual investigation.
  • Evaluate and interpret findings.
  • Report the results of the investigation, and formulate recommendations that emanate from the findings.
  • Create a new model that can be applied to solve the problem investigated.
  • Identify and analyse different scientific procedures in terms of the problem researched.
  • Critically read, interpret and analyse literature from different sources.
  • Search for literature on the identified research problem comparing the writings of different authors on the same related topic synthesising reading material on the topic researched.
  • Conclude from different readings and indicating anomalies.
  • Create a framework provided by the literature review.
  • Create a new model/approach/theory that applies to the research problem.
  • Compile a complete bibliography and reference list.
  • Write a thesis that shows that the learner can express him/herself.
  • Write a thesis that is linguistically correct and of an acceptable standard.
  • Write a thesis that is technically and scientifically acceptable to the examiners.

Integrated Assessment

Integrated assessment procedures ensure the purpose of the qualification is achievable.

Assessment will be solely in the form of an acceptable thesis but may also involve an oral defence thereof and publishing in approved scientific publications.
