Purpose and rationale

1. Public good

1.1 To strengthen the pool of academically top-qualified researchers, entrepreneurs, managers, decision makers, advisors and professionals active in the economic life of South Africa in order to ensure that the local leadership base of innovative and value-adding economic and scholarly activity is widened.

2. Private good

2.1 To provide learners with research, professional and practical skills that build on prior graduate and Masters-level knowledge and skills, attitude and competence in the economic and related sciences in such a way that a high Degree of academic leadership, further growth and ability to practice within professional or self-defined ethics can be developed;

2.2 To instil in learners the necessary confidence and attitude to communicate professionally at the highest level with others in the economic field;

2.3 To provide learners with the potential ability to develop the competence required for independently engaging as leaders in endeavours of an economic nature at the global level.

1. Economic and Related Problem Solving

The learner is competent to independently identify, assess and formulate complex and contextual abstract problems relating to the economic principle of satisfying unlimited needs with limited means and apply appropriate knowledge and high level skills to expand or redefine existing knowledge.

  1. Application of fundamental and specialist knowledge.

The learner confidently demonstrates expert knowledge of an area of specialisation in the economic and related sciences, or within an interdisciplinary context, by demonstrating the following performance:

a. Placing research within the broader context of the economic sciences, which withstands international intellectual scrutiny and contributes to original relevant knowledge;

b. Analysing, synthesising and evaluating information autonomously at highly abstract levels and in new situations;

c. Communicating professionally as an expert with others in the particular field.
