Purpose and rationale
The purpose of the qualification is
- To provide an opportunity for learners to obtain detailed knowledge of the discipline concerned and to create an awareness of the variety of institutional contexts in which it is applied.
- To give students the opportunity to become acquainted with the practical application of the principles, theories and models of the discipline in the work environment.
- To promote a group of learners into a rigorous and comprehensive theoretical and methodological programme in the discipline when the degree is done by dissertation.
- To contribute to the development of learners to become research orientated and to produce academics who have the knowledge, skills and who can transmit such knowledge to future students.
Entry requirements and RPL
Entry requirement for the qualification;
- The applicant must hold a bachelor degree from a recognised institution.
- The applicant must possess an Honours in the relevant discipline or such other qualification deemed equivalent from a recognised institution
- The applicant must possess an MBA in the relevant discipline or such other qualification deemed equivalent from a recognised institution
- Admission to the programme by selection.

A level of competence based on the assessment and recognition of prior learning will be considered.

Exit level outcomes
The DBA graduate is able to: -
- Demonstrate the ability to carry out research independently
- Critically review literature related to the topic area
- Demonstrate critical awareness of the chosen research design
- Integrate knowledge from a range of areas of the discipline to the topic under consideration.
- Demonstrate insight and competence in theory and context of the discipline
- Demonstrate knowledge and the ability to apply research methodologies and techniques to the discipline concerned as a field of study.
- Develop integration and communication skills through the design, execution and presentation of research.
Associated assessment criteria
The DBA graduate is assessed in the following way: -
- Formal examination of the thesis by assessors.
- Oral presentation of the findings of the dissertation to assessors.
- The assessment strategies used to indicate the integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes learnt will be tested through: -
- Summary of achievements of the application of theories in the practical work situation in the form of reports.
- Portfolios of related career opportunities in specified areas of discipline.
- Written report or research project submitted by the student to indicate ability to solve problems in the practical environment.
- Case studies.

INTERNAL
- Due to the interdisciplinary focus of the programme it will be possible for students from other faculties to be allowed into the programme if: -
- Their modules in a discipline are related or relevant to the programme
- The credits from other programme will make a contribution to the new direction
- Students with relevant modules from Business Management and Psychology could move across to studies in Social Science, Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations.
- Possibilities for internal articulation exists within the Faculty of Commerce and Administration.
