The purpose of this qualification is to reward research in the particular field of study. Upon qualifying learners will
- Design, conduct and write up original research.
- Demonstrate an understanding of scientific procedures and an ability to cope with research techniques.
- Demonstrate an understanding of literature related to the research problem.
- Write scientific papers of a high standard.

Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
This qualification allows for Recognition of Prior Learning for a leaner to attain entry/access to this qualification and to gain exemptions from some qualification requirements. Where an entry criterion applies, a prospective leaner may use prior learning experience in the field of public health to gain entry to the qualification. Submission of a portfolio of evidence as proof of practical experience from an appropriate setting will enable the learner admission to the qualification. Access to the qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning is possible if the learner produces evidence of having achieved the appropriate outcomes level of knowledge, skill, and competence. Access to the qualification is achievable if the learner can provide formal proof of credits earned towards the outcomes from an accredited service provider.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- A cognate Master's qualification in the related field, NQF Level 9.

This qualification consists of the following compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework Levels 10 totalling 360 Credits:
- Thesis, 360 Credits.
Exit level outcomes
- Design, conduct and write up original research.
- Demonstrate an understanding of scientific procedures and an ability to cope with research techniques.
- Demonstrate an understanding of literature related to the research problem.
- Write scientific papers of a high standard.

The following Associated Assessment Criteria will assess the Exit Level Outcomes in an integrated manner
- Express himself/herself clearly.
- Write papers that are linguistically correct and of a high standard.
- Write papers that are technically and scientifically of a high standard.
- Write a large number of papers that are published in highly respected journals and are seen to have made a significant contribution to the field of study.
Integrated Assessment
Integrated assessment procedures will achieve the purpose of the qualification. Through involving the evaluation of work published in internationally recognised refereed scientific journals, monographs or books freely available to the public.
