Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The qualification is designed to produce well qualified, competent people who wish to pursue a career in various fields relating to the Production, Policy Regulation and Security of Animals. It is expected that upon completion learners will be able to apply knowledge, skills, analytical techniques and methods in identifying and solving problems pertinent to animal production. The learner will play an important role in understanding and analysing aspects within the science of improving the animal production industry. Importantly, learners of the programme will have been introduced to research methodologies within the specialised field of study, which will provide them with skills for problem solving and advancing the knowledge within the sector.

Rationale

The National Development Plan 2030 clearly outlines the relevance Agricultural Developments will play in achieving its objectives of reducing poverty and inequality. In order to meet South Africa's potential in agriculture, we need to educate a substantial cohort of the population in the value of agriculture, in theories and good practices in agriculture and in the value of life-long learning. It is only through an education within agriculture that the sector will advance and ensure a sustainable production of food supply. In particular, a qualification with an animal production focus will ensure a cadre of learners that may practice in initiatives that enhance animal production, enhance the value of the animal products, and ensure that the food chain is managed in a sustainable manner, paying attention to ethical implications and make advances to ensure food security in the future. Learners of the Bachelor of Science in Animal Production will be relevant in a variety of sectors such as in animal farm management, animal genetics, and animal nutrition and will be able to participate in an advisory capacity to various stakeholders. Learners of this qualification will also have research aptitude, which provides them with a platform to contribute towards the field of Animal Production and to engage in life-long learning activities.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be used to access the qualification where the admission requirements obtained do not meet those required. In addition, this qualification may be achieved in part through the recognition of relevant prior learning and experience as per the University RPL policy in general, which outlines the structure and processes that must be followed to RPL a learner when the need arises. Appropriate assessment tasks and tools are designed to assess individual learners against the module/course outcomes on a case-by-case basis, with detailed records maintained. The University has trained RPL in various disciplinary fields to facilitate this process.

Integrated Assessment

Learning and assessment are integrated throughout this qualification. Continuous Formative Assessment is required to ensure that learners get feedback on their progress towards the achievement of specific learning outcomes. Assignments designed to meet the requirements of Integrated Assessment are such as to achieve: An integration of the achievement of exit-level outcomes in a way that demonstrates that the purpose of the qualification as a whole has been achieved, either as a whole in the component parts of the programme of study; Evaluation of learner performance to demonstrate applied competence; and Criterion-referenced assessment, which is clearly explained to and understood by the learners. Summative Assessment is concerned with the judgement of the learning in relation to the exit level outcomes of the qualification. Such judgement includes integrated assessment, which assesses the students' ability to integrate the larger body of knowledge, competencies and attitudes that are represented by the exit-level outcomes, either as a whole or as components of the qualification. The programme includes a research module, which measures all learning outcomes in an integrated manner.

International comparability

The University of Guelph in Canada offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture programme with a major on Animal Science. The programme acquaints students to animal science based on how environment affects productivity, how physiology affects reproduction, and how to improve food quality, production and performance through animal breeding and good nutrition. The programme covers topics on how animal behaviour is affected by housing systems and management practices to enhance farm animal welfare and productivity. Courses and independent research options cover animal nutrition, welfare, genetics and biotechnology, the programme prepares students for a wide variety of careers in Animal Production and Health. The Guelph University programme, as well as the University of Limpopo programme cover the four important topics in animal science, these being animal nutrition, animal physiology, and animal genetics animal health. The exit level outcomes of the programmes are similar in terms of knowledge, competencies and skills required at the exit level of the four-year programmes, particularly in terms of applicable knowledge, ethics, practical knowledge, scientific enquiry and communication.

The University of New England in Australia offers a four-year Bachelor of Animal Science Degree with one of the programmes being in livestock production. The admission requirements of the programmes are comparable, and both articulate to a Masters level of study. Although the University of New England programme places, much emphasis on sheep farming it also encompasses topics such as animal health, animal nutrition, animal genetics, intensive animal production and advisory services. The outcomes for both programmes indicate an advanced level of knowledge integration across the subjects within the field of Animal Science, applicable and practical knowledge, as well as research competencies (for those receiving an Honours level completion at the Australian University).

The University of Edinburgh in Scotland offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Science (Animal Science) programme. The programme considers global trends in livestock production and consumption and sustainable ways to meet those changing demands. Students learn fundamentals of animal biology and production and consider how the use of innovation within agri-food systems can help meet growing demands for animal products while considering animal health, welfare and the social acceptability of production systems. The programme contents thus align fairly well. Both programmes require the student to undertake a research project. One difference is that although the admission requirements are similar, learners of the Edinburgh programme may, based on performance, articulate into a Doctoral programme, whereas learners of the University of Limpopo programme may articulate into a Master's programme.
