Purpose and rationale

Purpose

Thus learners will be enabled to operate within this field more efficiently and effectively. Upon qualifying a learner will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of transport planning and logistics management in a South African and international contexts.
  • Diagnose and analyse economic and management principles of air, maritime and overland transport together with facilities management regarding port operations, warehouse management and material handling.
  • Monitor and evaluate developments in air, maritime and overland transport projects in terms of feasibility as well as outcomes.

Rationale

The Postgraduate Diploma in Transport Economics, Logistics and Supply Chain Management qualification is designed to equip learners with the skills needed to manage the transportation of products, its logistics and the supply chain. Learners will be employable within the public and private sectors around the world, either in large or small institutions, companies or manufacturers that purchase, transport and/or sell products. Also learners will acquire skills needed to handle and manage logistics professionally; learn how to manage the flow of products and information, locally, nationally and internationally and learn about the principles of transport planning and investment in the transport infrastructure.

The aim of the qualification is to train learners to fill the critical skill gaps needed in transport, supply chain, and logistics management discipline within public and private sector. This qualification also provides opportunity for professionals already employed within this industry to advance, strengthen and deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL applications will also be assessed based on University's policy framework for the Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning, including:

  • Work experience: Placement in a public sector or private sector, NGO work environment.
  • Curriculum Vitae: An extensive CV that includes which growth and learning over time is shown in the responsibilities associated with successive practical experiences.
  • At least two references: Confidential reports from two referees are required on the applicant's work and experience.
  • Written assessment of prior learning: A written open book test in which the basic underlying skills are tested.

The minimum entry to this qualification is a three (3) year Bachelors' Degree or equivalent.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1

  • Complex and multifaceted issues in transport planning are synthesised and modal options are appraised.
  • Appropriate tools to process and manage logistics and transport data, and information are used.
  • An analytical research report on a topical issue in transport and logistics is written.
  • Knowledge about the public and private sector groups who work in collaboration and the nature of interactions that can generate the collaborative and creative actions to deal with issues in transport and logistics are understood.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2

  • Economic and management principles of air, maritime and overland transport are analysed.
  • Management of facilities, port operations, warehouse management and material handling is monitored.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3

  • Facility management with regards to port operations, warehouse management and material handling is analysed.
  • Relevant information from relevant sources are gathered and synthesised for investigating specific logistic and transport problems.
  • Relevant data and information is managed and such information is communicated effectively in written documents.

Integrated Assessment

In assessing learners, every effort is taken to ensure that individual learning is being assessed. Both open-book and closed-book assessments will be used and when learners submit assignments, they have to testify that the work is their own.

A strong emphasis is placed on assuring that plagiarism does not occur. Every learner has to sign a declaration of own work for each assignment or case study submitted. Assignments are submitted electronically and are checked for similarities in content through Turnitin.

Formative Assessment

The 6 compulsory models are assessed as follows: A series of short web studies online tests (where applicable)/1 class quiz, 1 take home essay, 2 group presentations and a final test. The 2 elective modules are assessed as follows: 1 class quiz, 2 group presentations and a comprehensive take home assignment.

The class quizzes or web studies tests will monitor the learners comprehension of the relevant activities; the learner' ability to apply and analyse relevant concepts and will also enable learners to design schemes whilst utilising their unique work-based and societal learning experience. The final tests will test their ability to synthesise and integrate relevant concepts.

Summative Assessment

Internal moderation processes require that an academic not involved in the presentation of the subject will scrutinise the final test paper as well as the results of the marking process. The external examiners will scrutinise course outlines, assignment topics and set papers as well as all assessment products. There is also an external moderation of the final exam scripts by a panel. Moderator's reports are firstly discussed with individual academics. Areas for improvement are identified and monitored. An executive summary of all moderators' reports are tabled at the Academic Planning Committee for purposes of continuous quality control.

The qualification assessment adheres to the University's policy related to assessment, moderation and examination.
