Purpose and rationale
Purpose
The competencies captured in this qualification will allow the learner to acquire work related knowledge on the complexities of using sport and recreation as a tool for development and upliftment, with a strong emphasis on peace building.
The core component of the qualification will allow the learner to acquire additional competencies to those already acquired through a Bachelor's Degree: Sport Development and Policy Development. The elective component of the qualification allows the learner to acquire learning in skills such as sport leadership, conflict resolution, diversity and community development.
The qualifying learner will be capable of
- Demonstrating coherent and critical knowledge in the field of sport and recreation as a tool for community development, conflict prevention, social transformation and peace building.
- Analysing sport and development policies and trends as a tool for community development, conflict prevention, social transformation and peace building.
- Applying monitoring and evaluation techniques from a range of research methodologies to sport and recreation.
- Evaluating current initiatives in the field of sport and recreation as a tool for community development, conflict prevention, social transformation and peace building.
Rationale
This qualification provides specialised education and learning in sport and recreation as a tool for community development, conflict prevention, social transformation and peace building.
The typical learner attempting this qualification will have completed a Bachelor's Degree in Sports and/or Exercise Science and would either want to work in, or already be working at, a sports club, a community based organisation or a non-governmental organisation which focuses on development and upliftment through sport and recreation.
This qualification should allow the learner access to further associated learning through a Master's Degree at NQF Level 9.
Entry requirements and RPL
The knowledge, skills and cognitive ability demonstrated in a cognate Bachelor's Degree at NQF Level 7.
Recognition of Prior Learning
This qualification may be achieved in part or completely through the Recognition of Prior Learning, which includes formal, informal and non-formal learning and work experience.
Recognition of Prior Learning may also be used to grant access to the qualification to those learners who do not meet the admission requirements.
Access to the Qualification
Learners registering for this qualification should already have achieved a Bachelor's Degree in Sport and/or Exercise Science at NQF Level 7.

The qualification consists of compulsory and elective modules.
Compulsory Modules
- Sport, Development and Peace, 20 Credits.
- Policy, Implementation and Evaluation in Sport and Development, 20 Credits.
- Research Methods in the Development Context, 20 Credits.
Total: 60 Credits.
Elective Modules
Learners are to choose three of the following modules with a combined value of 60 Credits
- Conflict Transformation, Development and Peace, 20 Credits.
- Leadership, Culture and Diversity, 20 Credits.
- Health and Development, 20 Credits.
- Sport and Games for Personal Growth and Community Development, 20 Credits.
- Sport and Recreation as Psychosocial Tools in the Context of Violence and Disasters, 20 Credits.

The following Associated Assessment Criteria should be applied in an integrated manner for all the Exit Level Outcomes

- An understanding of resource and process management is demonstrated in a sport and recreation context.
- Identify, analyse and solve problems in a sport and recreation context.
- An understanding of socio-economic challenges is demonstrated.
Integrated Assessment
Integrated assessment will be applied extensively across the modules of learning so as to ensure the integrated achievement of the Exit-Level Outcomes.
Formative assessment will be applied continually throughout the learning pathway of the individual learning modules.
Summative assessment will be applied to ensure the achievement of each learning module.

Articulation options
Horizontal Articulation is possible with the following qualification
- Postgraduate Diploma: Arts: Development Studies, Level 8.
Vertical Articulation is possible with the following qualification
- Master of Arts: Development Studies, Level 9.
International comparability
The module content, the degree of complexity and the notional learning time of this qualification have been compared with the following programmes presented at the following foreign institutions:
- University for Peace, Costa Rica. This is a United Nations mandated Graduate School of Peace and Conflict Studies in keeping with the aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations.
- University of Chichester, UK.
The Masters Degree offered by the University of Peace in Costa Rica offers the following modules as part of its qualification:

Despite being a Masters Degree it does not have a large research component and is therefore similar in design to a South African Postgraduate Diploma.
The Postgraduate Diploma offered by the University of Chichester in the UK offers the following modules as part of its qualification:

- Introduction to Sport and Fitness Industries.
- Sport and Social Inclusion.
- Researching Sport Development and Management.
- Theories of Sport Development and Management.
- Employment and Training in Sport Development and Management.
The qualification content of these two institutions compares favourably with the Postgraduate Diploma: Sport for Development, Level 8.
