Purpose and rationale
Purpose
To produce leaders in the area of Maritime Studies with the idea of increasing the capacity of South Africa's maritime industry to be more effective. It is hoped that this qualification will also contribute to the development of capacity on the eastern and western seaboards of Africa. Learners are equipped to contribute to a wide range of maritime issues. This will be informed by their experience in research.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

- Bachelor of Philosophy in Maritime, Transportation and Logistics, NQF Level 7.

Associated assessment criteria
Integrated Assessment
Learners will demonstrate their mastery of the required Exit Level Outcomes through an integrated array of assignments, presentations, tutorials, and examinations. The research dissertation will be a test of whether the integration of knowledge and application skills has occurred and whether multidisciplinary skills have been developed. Learners will also be assessed on the basis of the contribution that they have made to maritime studies through the research they have done. They will be assessed on the thoroughness of their research into the appropriate sources, the critical approach to these materials, etc.
