Integrated Assessment

As a Postgraduate qualification the majority of assessments will be case studies and simulations which will require students to draw from the various management disciplines and theoretical models pertaining to specific modules and, apply this knowledge to resolving 'real-world 'problems.

Each module will have formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments may take the form of individual or group assignments and online assessments. The formative assessments will be weighted 40% and the summative assessment 60%. In order to be credited for a module, the student will need to attain an average of 50%. Considering that the Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is a general management where possible, cases will integrate aspects of the core/compulsory modules; this however will be difficult with regard to the elective modules. All modules are 'stand-alone'; however, learners cannot register for the Research Project without completing Business Research or attempting it concurrently.

Progression and comparability

Articulation options

The qualification offers the following horizontal and vertical articulation opportunities.

Horizontal Articulation

  • An appropriate qualification at Level 8.

Vertical Articulation

  • An appropriate Master's Degree.

International comparability

This qualification is modelled around very similar qualifications currently being offered at many national Business Schools, since this became a prerequisite for admission to the Professional Master of Business Administration (MBA) (Level 9). Some international Business Schools and Faculties also seem to follow the 'old' South Africa model of awarding a Postgraduate diploma in management to students who registered for the MBA and completed the coursework modules, but not the dissertation. This practice has however been discontinued in South Africa (SA) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is a stand-alone qualification. Furthermore, in many international institutions, the Bachelors is a 4-year Degree, thus graduates do not require a Postgraduate Diploma to articulate to a Master's Degree. In most Indian business schools, the PGDM is common. For example, in the Great Lakes Institute of Management in Chennai, the course helps the students to develop into business-ready managers, capable of responding to complex business requirements that arise in a changing global business environment. The aforementioned outcome is in line with our proposed Degree. Some Indian institutes offer a 2 year PGDM which is equivalent to the MBA.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) campuses in India also offer a two (2) year PGDM, with core and elective courses/modules. The Indian PGDM is designed to prepare students for careers in industry, across functional areas. The program equips students with strong conceptual skills to manage businesses in an integrated manner. The emphasis is on developing a holistic manager with a vision to take on the challenges of the future in a socially sensitive manner. Electives offered are Behavioural Sciences, Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Management Centre for Human Values. In addition to the above mentioned electives student also have an option to select from Operations, Public Policy and Management and Strategic Management. All IIM graduates are provided with an option to opt for Master in Management (MIM) programme from ESCP Europe provided they fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria, and the PGDM is accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and Association of MBAs (AMBA). What needs to be highlighted about all the two year PGDMs is that there is a 6-month internship and 6 months are allowed for the research report. In effect, the coursework component is akin to the one (1) year SA PGDM.

The world renown and highly accredited Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) offer admission to their one (1) year PGDM to anyone with a first Degree and at least 5 years work experience after graduation.
