Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology Management is directed at those employed within the information technology environment. Qualifying learners will be imbued with the skills of aligning business strategies and technology to effectively perform their duties. The qualification aims to build skills in information technology to generate value to an organisation through the use of technology.

With the current skills need, and the lack of postgraduate qualifications in information technology management, this qualification aims to produce qualifying learners who are in possession of the following attributes:

  • Analytical thinking;
  • Ability to manage complex problems within the information technology environment;
  • Ability to effectively direct a team towards an objective;
  • Effective communication skills;
  • Decision-making skills;
  • Ethical conduct;
  • An understanding of corporate governance principles;

And

  • Social responsibility.

Rationale

Today's best technology to manage and process data is the utilisation of Information Technology (IT). IT must be seen as an investment and not an expense. Information Technology has revolutionised the phase of business around the world. Local businesses have become global in how they operate due to a simple website. This could lead to roles like consultancy in business intelligence, as well as many other IT leadership roles.

The revolution in personal communication and computation power is changing organisational roles and tasks and is offering increased effectiveness and productivity to organisational designers who choose to take advantage of technological innovations. The qualification bridges the gap between your existing tech knowledge and managerial capabilities. It covers core units, and allows learners to choose electives and shape their qualification to their interests or career aspirations. It provides the learner with progression into the Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Masters qualification within a specialised field upon completion of the Bachelor of Commerce in Information Technology Management.

The focus of the qualification is on how businesses can make the best use of computer technology to provide the information needed to achieve their goals. In the same way as your own needs and priorities are unique to you, each organisation has different goals and requirements, and the successful implementation of information systems requires a thorough understanding of the business issues involved as well as the different technologies that are available.

Developing the required skills for the economy entails providing access to relevant information technology management qualifications, which is a key objective of the qualification. There is a high demand for the qualification, according to the market survey conducted.

The advances in technology not only call for people who can work with the hardware and software (Information Technology Specialists), but also those individuals who have a sound understanding of how organisations make use of computers to function effectively and efficiently. The ability to understand the various business processes and create a link between the users or customers and the technology is the primary role of the Information Technology Manager.
