Purpose and rationale
The diploma is intended as specialised training for people who wish to establish their own businesses. Candidates who have already majored in management courses are disqualified.
- The purpose of the diploma is to take graduates form widely divergent academic backgrounds and provide them the basic skills necessary for the operation of a small business enterprise.
2.The diploma also provides the basic techniques for independent research, analysis and articulation of ideas.
Entry requirements and RPL
Candidates are not normally admitted to the diploma unless they are in possession of a Bachelors degree.
Candidates should be able to communicate competently in English.

Candidates are granted credit for equivalent prior learning and experience as determined by the University rules governing the recognition of prior learning and experience.

The learner will
- Possess an adequate knowledge of basic management and accounting principles to be able to commence a career as an independent entrepreneur.
- Be competent to communicate in a professional manner.
- Have an understanding of the nature of academic endeavour and appreciate the need for life-long learning.

1. In order to meet this exit level outcome, the learner will
a. Be capable of adaptable and flexible behaviour, with sound social skills in dealing with others.
b. Have the ability to perform tasks independently without supervision
c. Have the ability to think laterally and innovatively in applying concepts and principles in a business environment.
d. Be able to display judgement and objectivity in analysing information and performing tasks.
e. Have an appreciation of the need to respond ethically and to operate with integrity and moral courage in the business environment.
2. In order to meet this exit level outcome, the learner will
a. Be able to communicate ideas and principles in both the spoken and written word.
b. Be able to use appropriate technology to facilitate computation and communication.
c. Be aware of the multilingual nature of South African society, and be able to use language appropriately.
3. In order to meet this exit level outcome, the learner will
a. Possess a framework against which new information and advances in business operational systems can be assessed and assimilated.
b. Be able to access new information from libraries, the Internet and other appropriate sources.
c. Understand that business and economic systems change continually requiring the acquisition and application of new information to address changing circumstances requiring the need for life-long learning.
Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved
- Assessment procedures adhere to Rhodes University assessment policy.
- Assessment entails three elements.
- Continual formal assessment both formative and summative
- Continual informal assessment (formative)
- Formal end-of-course assessment (summative)
The course work on which continuous assessment is based includes work done individually and in groups, and may consist of combinations of tests, practicals and a range of problem solving exercises.
