Purpose and rationale

  • To introduce students systematically and coherently to community work as a field of specialisation and to the relevant body of knowledge, skills, values and ethics.
  • To develop their knowledge and skills in research and identification of key elements of problems and selection of appropriate methods for their solution.
  • To develop practice skills and techniques required in effective service to communities (planning, managing and evaluation skills).
  • To enhance their report writing skills.

Entry requirements and RPL

  • A Bachelor's Degree in any discipline or an approved diploma in social work and demonstration of competence to the satisfaction of the Head of Department.
  • Any other suitable qualification and/or experience to be approved by the Head of Department.

Exit level outcomes

At the end of the programme, the student should be able to

  1. Develop programmes for the empowerment of rural or other communities.
  2. Create awareness of development opportunities and link communities with resources.
  3. Plan and organise training programmes.
  4. Undertake research and write clear and concise reports.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to carry out administrative and management responsibilities effectively and efficiently.
  6. Establish and maintain relationships with strategic partners in government, civil society and bilateral agencies.
  7. Establish and maintain constructive interpersonal, negotiating consultative and communication skills.
  8. Demonstrate analytical skills to review trends in society and translate these in practical terms and apply them to programming.
  9. Demonstrate the ability to provide authoritative advice, advocate for issues related to the special field of interest and provide leadership.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in financial management and fund raising for Non-Profit Organisation (NGO's).

Articulation options

The student will be absorbed for employment in development work in government and non-governmental organisations. They may also pursue higher qualifications at this university or elsewhere in the country. This Department offers a Course Work Masters degree in Community Work.
