Purpose and rationale

Entry requirements and RPL

Matriculation exemption (or equivalent) with the requisite number of matric credit points, and a pass in the higher grade or 60 percent in Standard grade Mathematics, or equivalent examination, or the award of the Certificate in Business Management of the School of Business. Learners who do not meet the mathematics requirements can be registered for a special extended curriculum 8-semester degree programme.

Exit level outcomes

  • Pursue advanced study in Accountancy concentrating on both theory and applications.
  • The learner will develop an advanced knowledge of the literature of accountancy and a critical capacity in the field.
  • The learner will have acquired specialised skills in Accountancy and will be equipped to understand modern technology in terms of conceptual tools and techniques.
  • Having completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy, the learner will be eligible to write part 1 of the SAICA professional examinations.

Associated assessment criteria

Demonstrate critical thinking and can make connections across disciplines. Learners will be required to show an ability to comment in an analytical fashion in assessment tasks, and to write in a creative and critical manner.

Integrated Assessment

The University of Natal is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all / most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.

The accounting 300 project and presentation provides an integrated assessment procedure for the B Com (Accountancy). The cross linkages in all disciplines are emphasised in the four core areas of the Dip Acc. At Honours, Masters and PhD the dissertation provides the integrated assessment.

The B.Com (Accountancy) can be articulated with other streams of the General Studies B.Com. The Accounting 300 project and presentation provides an integrated assessment procedure for the B.Com (Accountancy).
