Purpose and rationale

The purpose of this research qualification is to deepen qualified learners' knowledge in particular aspects in town and regional planning and related fields through prescribed course work and to provide them with the competencies to plan, execute and write up scientific research in the urban and regional planning field.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Town and Regional Planning, NQF Level 8.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture, NQF Level 8.

Exit level outcomes

On completion of the qualification learners should be able to demonstrate

  1. Design and plan scientific research.
  2. Execute scientific research.
  3. Undertake research independently.
  4. Undertake a deepened understanding and knowledge of the theories, philosophies and practice of the specific sub-field in which research.
  5. Make deductions from the research and relate it back to the discipline.
  6. Communicate effectively on a professional level through written and oral means.
  7. Make use of information technology in the various phases of the research processes.

Associated assessment criteria

Learners will be assessed on their ability to illustrate the exit level outcomes as stated, the production of a research dissertation and an academic article for publication.

Yes, research dissertation and academic article for publication. Assessment in the qualification is based on assessment through a research essay, which aims at assessing learners' ability to plan, structure, conceptualise and execute a scientific research process and report the findings thereof. The assessment also includes an examination by internal and external examiners of core and elective courses.
