Purpose and rationale

The purpose of the qualification is to

  • Offer learners the opportunity to acquire a range of skills at various levels of the research process under supervision.
  • To allow learners to explore new depths of knowledge in a specific field or area of social work or social welfare.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Social Work Honours (NQF Level 8).

Exit level outcomes

  1. Undertake supervised research in a specified area of social work or social welfare.
  2. A Learner will acquire knowledge of, and demonstrate a range of research skills, i.e. selection of a topic for research, formulate a research question, write a research proposal, undertake literature searches, compile research questionnaires and interviews schedules, analysis and interpretation of research data, presentation of research in a research report, etc.

Integrated Assessment

The qualification is assessed in the form of a master's thesis. This assessment may be augmented with a written or oral examination if so required by unanimous agreement between internal and external assessors.
