Purpose and rationale

Purpose

To provide qualifiers with specialised knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a Natural Science discipline that provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

Rationale

To provide South Africa with significant numbers of Postgraduates in a number of Natural Sciences in order to ensure that the local leadership base of innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activity is widened.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Access to the qualification can be gained in terms of the university's Recognition of Prior Learning policy and its admission criteria as stipulated by Senate.

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science: Honours, Level 8 in a Natural Science discipline.
  • Postgraduate Diploma, Level 8 in a Natural Science discipline.
  • Masters Diploma in Technology, Level 8 with a minimum 3 years' appropriate experience.
  • Bachelor of Technology Level 7 with a minimum 3 years' appropriate experience.

  1. Display specialised scholastic and advanced research skills in a Natural Science discipline and perform a full range of advanced procedures in complex, variable and highly specialised contexts.
  2. Possess specialised knowledge of a major Natural Science discipline, capable of information processing at the level of analysis, transformation and evaluation of abstract data and concepts, and capable of formulation of appropriate responses to resolve contextually abstract science problems.
  3. Communicate effectively, in both oral and written modes, with peers and the broader community using the appropriate structure, style and graphic support.
  4. Assume responsibility for planning, resourcing and managing processes within broad parameters and functions and assume complete accountability for determining, achieving and evaluating personal and/or group output.

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved. Assessment may consist of any of the following combinations:

  • A thesis.
  • A thesis and an oral examination.
  • A thesis and written papers.
  • A thesis and an oral and a written examination.

The intended purpose of this Master of Accountancy is to provide the learners with a professional, vocational, and sound understanding of the general theoretical principles and their applications in the field of research accountancy. The qualification will be treated according to the policies and procedures of the institution regarding master's dissertations, monitoring, and assessment of learners' progress in the qualification, provision for learners disputes regarding assessment results and Recognition of Prior Learning. The qualification aims to enhance research capacity and increase access by providing an opportunity to articulate to master's degree. The qualification will accommodate learners with a postgraduate diploma and relevant honours/qualifications on NQF level 8, a minimum of 120 credits achieved at other institutions as well as vertical articulation from relevant master's degrees.
