To produce a graduate who can produce a dissertation showing that they can
Understand the nature and purpose of the investigation;
Are sufficiently acquainted with the relevant literature;
Have mastered the necessary techniques
Have acquired a thorough understanding af scientific methods;
Are capable of assessing the significance of their findings;
Can produce a dissertation of a satisfactory style and presentation
Entry requirements and RPL
Completion of an appropriate 4 year Bachelor's Degree at the required standard, usually a 60% credit weighted average.
Attainment of a level of competence through prior learning which in the opinion of the University Senate is adequate for the purposes of advanced study and where relevant, research.

Associated assessment criteria
Demonstrate their ability and proficiency in each of the seven learning outcomes. These are tested by means of a comprehensive dissertation which may be supplemented by an oral presentation of their research findings
All components are second examined with external examination for the dissertation
INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT
The University of Natal is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.

There are two routes which can be followed to achieve the Master of Philosophy:
Purpose:
The intended purpose of this Master of Accountancy is to provide the learners with a professional, vocational, and sound understanding of the general theoretical principles and their applications in the field of research accountancy. The qualification will be treated according to the policies and procedures of the institution regarding master's dissertations, monitoring, and assessment of learners' progress in the qualification, provision for learners disputes regarding assessment results and Recognition of Prior Learning. The qualification aims to enhance research capacity and increase access by providing an opportunity to articulate to master's degree. The qualification will accommodate learners with a postgraduate diploma and relevant honours/qualifications on NQF level 8, a minimum of 120 credits achieved at other institutions as well as vertical articulation from relevant master's degrees.
