Purpose and rationale

The first purpose of the Masters of Science in Geology is to provide the learners with post-graduate level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence which will enable the leraner to function in the geological fields with minimum supervision.

Its second purpose is to provide the nations with graduates who can apply their geological knowledge in solving problems related to mining of existing ore deposits, and the exploration for new ones, their skills can also be used in the engineering and environmental fields.

The third purpose is to provide higher level teachers with a clear knowledge of geology which can be used in teaching earth sciences and related environmental studies.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Science Honours in Geology, Level 8.

Or

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Geology, Level 8.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Will demonstrate an in depth understanding of the principles of Geology.
  2. Will demonstrate the ability to apply geological knowledge in solving problems of related fields.
  3. Will show the ability to search, retrieve, analyse, synthesise and communicate geological information of publication quality will demonstrate the understanding of geological field and laboratory techniques.
  4. Will develop and demonstrate appropriate attitudes towards research.

The learner

  • Will select and use a few concepts and principles in the analysis and interpretation of Geological problems.
  • Will select a site with environmental or geological problems and use geology principles to solve or suggest a solution for such a problem.
  • Will present oral and written geological reports based on literature research, field work and laboratory investigations.
  • Will be able to convey such information to his peers in a concise and scientific manner.
  • Will be able to prepare manuscripts for publication.
  • Will conduct his research in an unbiased using scientific methods.
