Purpose and rationale
This Masters Degree may be obtained in one of two ways viz.
- By thesis, the topic of which must be agreed upon jointly by the learner and the Head of the Department.
- Course work and a mini-dissertation, the topic of which must be agreed upon jointly by the learner and the Head of the Department.
The purpose of this qualification is to train applied statisticians who will be able to work as academics at both universities and other tertiary institutions in this country. As such they will be able to lecture in both Applied Statistics and Statistics and will be able to work as researchers in these disciplines. These statisticians will also be able to work in any sector of the South African economy. They would be able to work in Health related fields and many Government Departments.

Recognition of prior learning
An Honours degree in Mathematical Statistics or any other indication of sufficient prior learning that can be demonstrated and assessed.

Exit level outcomes
The expected exit level outcomes will be
- Knowledge and experience of research methodology
- Knowledge and understanding of chosen modules
- Knowledge and understanding of the learners chosen field of research
- The ability to do a literature survey
- Competency in the use of suitable statistical software.

Assessment Criteria
Assessment criteria will be based on testing the learners knowledge of the chosen fields of study and on his/her mini-dissertation. The qualifier will:
- Apply the correct methodology to a given problem
- Use the correct statistical procedures to use in a given circumstance
- Be familiar with this field of research and have done a literature survey
- Use the most appropriate software for the given problem
Alternatively if the learner has opted to do the masters degree by dissertation only, then it will be this dissertation that will be assessed.

The intended purpose of this Master of Accountancy is to provide the learners with a professional, vocational, and sound understanding of the general theoretical principles and their applications in the field of research accountancy.
