Purpose and rationale

The programme will provide people interested in pursuing a career in public health, whether as practitioners, managers or researchers, with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes. The neglect of public health training has contributed to the poor performance of health services in South Africa. This programme will begin to redress in backlog in public health training within the region.

The MPH is an internationally recognised qualification to prepare professional for leadership roles in the health sector. The MPH is open to health workers and social scientist interested in public health. The MPH will allow mid-career professionals to improve their effectiveness or advance their provisions.

Entry requirements and RPL

Applicants for the programme must have

i. At least a four-year Bachelors degree or recognised equivalent.

ii. Have been employed in a relevant management post for a minimum of three years.

iii. Adequate writing and numeric skills.

The number of places on the programme is limited. Applicants will be selected by a selection committee on the basis of

  • commitment to public health
  • academic merit
  • addressing representivity

Recognition of prior learning

Applicants without the required qualification can apply to the selection committee for recognition of prior learning if they have at least four years relevant work experience and can satisfy the committee that they can cope with studies at this level.

Exit level outcomes

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved

Integrated assessment will be used for formative and summative assessments. Assignments and examinations will primarily focus on the application of learning to specific problems and contexts rather than the reproduction of theoretical knowledge. Real problems and case studies will be used wherever possible.

  • Individual and group written assignments
  • Individual and group oral presentations

  • Written, practical and oral examinations
  • Computer-based examinations

Progression and comparability

Articulation options

Articulation possibilities will increase as public health modules and programmes are developed within the region and throughout the country.

At present, credits obtained in the DHSM can count towards the Master in Public Health (MPH) in the School of Family and Public Health Medicine such as the Diploma in Health Services Management (DHSM) and the Diploma in Occupational Health (DOH). Completion of the core modules of hte MPH will make up the core formal learning for medical pratictioners completing the Masters in Medicine in Public Health Medicine (MMed (PHM)).

The University of Natal is a member of the Eastern Seaboard Association of Tertiary Institutions (esATI). One important initiative of esATI is to collaborate on the development of public health training in the region. The school of Family and Public Health Medicine is participating in the development of a regional MPH programme and it is envisaged that modules would be transferable between postgraduate programme of the esATI institutions.

Modules being developed for the proposed Diploma in Genitourinary Medicine and Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in other Schools within the medical faculty could also be credited on the public health programme.

Postgraduate students and staff at the university will be permitted to register for individual modules relevant to continuing professional development (CPD) or staff development

The intended purpose of this Master of Accountancy is to provide the learners with a professional, vocational, and sound understanding of the general theoretical principles and their applications in the field of research accountancy. The qualification will be treated according to the policies and procedures of the institution regarding master's dissertations, monitoring, and assessment of learners' progress in the qualification, provision for learners disputes regarding assessment results and Recognition of Prior Learning. The qualification aims to enhance research capacity and increase access by providing an opportunity to articulate to master's degree.
