Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The aim of this programme is to produce a competent, critical, and skilled vascular and endovascular surgeon, capable of practicing independently in both public and private service. Candidates with a basic medical Degree (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees) and a Fellowship in Surgery (Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of South Africa) may apply for this particular course.

Rationale

The training programme aims to allow certification (according to the requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Africa) as a registered subspecialist in Vascular Surgery.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall not be admitted to the programme, unless he/she

  1. Submits proof that he/she, prior to commencing with education and training in the relevant subspecialty, has complied with all the requirements for registration as a specialist in the primary or one of the primary specialities listed against the relevant subspecialty.
  2. Has been registered as a specialist in that field.
  3. Has been appointed against an Health Professions Council of South Africa-approved training number.

Qualification rules

This qualification consists of compulsory modules at Level 9 totalling 180 Credits.

Compulsory Modules

  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Vascular Surgery Part 1, 120 Credits.
  • MPhil in Vascular Surgery Part 2, 60 Credits.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Identify and solve problems pertaining to vascular surgery patients.
  2. Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organization or community.
  3. Assess and evaluate vascular patients with a view to the provision of medical, surgical and endovascular treatment, express opinions on likely outcomes and the validity of the treatment options.
  4. Collect, analyse, organize and critically evaluate information with regard to patient acuity.
  5. Communicate effectively using visual, mathematic and or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written persuasion.
  6. Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment, individual patients and the health of others.
  7. Show an understanding as to the rationing of vascular and endovascular surgery resources in an environment that may not be able to offer such options to all patients.
  8. Commit to life-long learning.

Associated Assessment Criteria

The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be applied in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes.

  • Asses and evaluate all vascular patients.
  • Direct the institution of appropriate vascular medical care.
  • Direct and advise on diagnostic and exploratory investigations relevant to all vascular patients. Identify, plan and manage issues pertaining to vascular health care at institutional, organizational and community levels.
  • Formulate and manage appropriate vascular surgical and interventional strategies.
  • Participate effectively and show the lead in decision-and policy-making activities and provide reliable advice.
  • Appreciate the power and responsibility of exercising professional judgment or expertise in the field of vascular and endovascular surgery.
  • Demonstrate ability to care for, manage and direct the efforts of others to provide a seamless vascular and endovascular surgical service.
  • Demonstrate professional competence, including attitudes and skills needed to secure.
  • Get recognition by peer, profession and community relating to vascular and endovascular surgery.
  • Take leadership positions in the vascular surgical health sector and enable transformational shifts that promote effectiveness and efficiency in vascular and endovascular surgery, within the framework of health service delivery.

Intergrated Assessment

The examination consists of two parts. The examination in Part I consists of one or more written paper(s) and/or such practical and/or oral examinations as the examiners may require. The examination in Part 2 (for those candidates who wish to obtain the Degree) consists of a dissertation.

The intended purpose of this Master of Accountancy is to provide the learners with a professional, vocational, and sound understanding of the general theoretical principles and their applications in the field of research accountancy. The qualification will be treated according to the policies and procedures of the institution regarding master's dissertations, monitoring, and assessment of learners' progress in the qualification, provision for learners disputes regarding assessment results and Recognition of Prior Learning.
